Charlotte Area To Become Next Wine Country Contender
Could the Queen City become the next big destination for wine lovers? According to a Feb. 20 article from Bisnow Charlotte, a recent petition approval by Charlotte City Council will allow wineries to occupy the same urban and industrial zoning districts as breweries.
"There's obviously great interest in wineries or breweries or maybe a combination," said Mayor Vi Lyles in a statement to Bisnow Charlotte.
The petition was filed by Lindsay Dorrier, vice president of retail operations at Bold Rock Hard Cider.
City council member Dimple Ajmara told Bisnow Charlotte that she prepared herself for the vote by doing a lot of research on wineries and their economic impact.
"I hope the petitioner brings a lot more economic opportunities to our region," Ajmera was quoted as saying in the article. "So, no pressure there."
The zoning committee staff unanimously supported the proposition, noting that wineries have the potential to stimulate economic development while leaving a less intensive manufacturing footprint than breweries. The staff also added that wineries can provide tasting rooms, similar to breweries' tap rooms, to add a social layer to the fabric of the community.
In the meantime, Charlotte area residents and visitors can enjoy a variety of local wineries that are within a day's drive or less. North Carolina has grown into one of the most popular states for producing wines, so it's no surprise that there are around 86 wineries just within the Piedmont region!
